Message from the CEO

The current season is almost over and the awards for leading jockey and leading apprentice are well and truly decided, with Brendon McCoull and Justin Hamer set to win those titles respectively.  The leading trainer is not quite settled at the time of writing with two meetings to go and John Blacker in the box seat leading by 4 wins from Charlie Goggin.  All Tasmanian racing awards, including the 2008 Tasmanian Thoroughbred racing hall of fame inductions, will be presented on Friday 15th August at Tattersall’s Park and we hope to see you there.

At last years AGM the rule pertaining to Member for Life eligibility was changed so that any member with 40 or more years continuous membership became eligible.  Previously the length of continuous membership was fifty years.

We are pleased to announce that 12 members are now set to join Bert Wicks and Athol Cook as Members for Life of the Tasmanian Racing Club; Ronald Banks AM, Rodney Berry, Phillip Burbury, Peter Dolan, Ken Drake, Henry Edgell, Stuart Elliss, Tem Fish, Michael Johns, Clarrie Johnson, Irvin Kean and Cam Sorell.

The club was saddened by the recent passing of Life Member John Mitchell.  John was chairman of the club from 1982 to 1984 during a period described by Bert Wicks in “Men of Influence” as “the most difficult political period of the club’s history.”  Our sympathies go out to John’s family and friends.

Finally, members are reminded that bookings for Derby and Cup days are being taken from the 1st of August 2008.  Book early to make sure you don’t miss out!
